South American Camelids
About our alpacas
Alpacas are domesticated South American camelids, closely related to llamas, primarily raised for their soft, luxurious fiber. Native to the Andean highlands of Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, they stand about 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh between 120 and 200 pounds. They are gentle, herd-oriented animals with a calm temperament, perfect ambassadors for visitors of all ages.
What makes alpacas special
- Two breeds at the sanctuary: the Huacaya (fluffy, crimped fleece) and the Suri (silky, dreadlock-like fiber).
- Hypoallergenic fleece warmer than wool, in over 20 natural shades.
- Calm, herd-oriented temperament , they make excellent companions for visitors.
- Bred for fiber, not as pack animals , that's the key difference from their cousin, the llama.
- Long-lived , alpacas typically live 15 to 20 years in good care.
